2013 Year in Review & 2014 Goals

Chickettes.com 2013 in Review
I can hardly believe it’s 2014 already!  I’ve spent a bit of time reflecting on accomplishments achieved over the past year and goals for the coming year (for the blog and my personal life).  Below is a summary of my accomplishments and goals for Chickettes.

Accomplishments in 2013

  • I set out with a goal to swatch all of the Gelish colors by the end of 2013 and accomplished that for the most part.  I swatched every color that existed prior to 2013 and the majority of the new colors that were released throughout the year.  I still have to swatch some of the Trends and a couple of hard to find colors.  You can view all of my Gelish swatches in this gallery, or check out the spreadsheet that I use to track my collection & swatches.
  • My nail art was featured on several platforms including the Facebook pages of Gelish, Gelish MINI, Nail It Magazine, Orly and Couture.
  • I hosted several awesome giveaways over the year including ones sponsored by Gelish MINI, Red Carpet Manicure, Wantable, Esther’s Nail Center, and LacQit.
  • I started making YouTube videos.
  • I learned lots of new techniques from friends in various social groups including how to do glitter gradients and use pigment powders for nail art.
  • Chickettes has gained lots of new followers on various social platforms and I have loved the interaction with the fans and followers.
  • My photography skills improved greatly over the year and I think I found my ideal hand poses for photographing swatches and nail art.
  • And I developed a media kit to use when communicating with potential sponsors, though I haven’t shared it publicly until now.  Click here to see what it looks like.

Goals for 2014

  • Finish swatching the Gelish Trends line and any new Gelish colors that come out over the course of the year.
  • Branch out into new and different brands of gel polish, and hopefully develop sponsor relationships with some of these brands (let me know your favorites).
  • Swatch all of the Ink and Shellac polishes that are in my current collection.
  • Make more YouTube videos and improve upon my video editing skills.  I’d like to make my videos a little more streamlined and professional.
  • Create an intro video for my YouTube channel.
  • Continue learning new nail art techniques.

I would love to hear from you about the types of things that you’d like to see, or see more of in the coming months too so please leave comments with your ideas!

Favorite Nail Art of 2013

As I was looking back over my swatches and nail art pictures from the past year, these were some of my favorites.  They are in order from oldest to newest so you can see the progression of my photography skills and hand poses.  Each has a link back to the original post if you’d like to read about how they were done.

Hi Andrea! Happy New Year!!! Thank you for helping me get started on the whole gelish nail stuff. I did my first one a couple of days ago. I have a ways to go buy plan on getting just the basic polish nailed (no pun intended) before trying some nail art. Again – thanks for all your videos and website!!!! They are very, very helpful!!!

    All the best in 2014!

Love your blog! This year I’d love to see more comparisons of SOG brands (particularly application and wear testing), as there seem to be so many new brands of gel polish being released.

I Love your blog! Thank you for sharing your talent with us. I would enjoy seeing color comparisons between brands. Also a little bit on foil and nail tape. I can’t figure out how to get the tape to stick :-)

    Happy New Year!

Hi Andrea, love your blog! I’ve been an addict for a few months now, and I follow it avidly. I discovered a color combination yesterday that I thought you would really like, knowing your love for the color teal. You may have tried this already, but I thought I’d share it in case you haven’t. I did two coats of Gelish “Holiday Party Blues” (which is a color I purchased based on your recommendation actually) topped with one coat of “Oocha Coocha Bing Bang” and it created this really pretty dark teal blue color. And depending on which lighting you are in, in takes on different hues, changing between more blue, teal, and even green. I highly recommend trying it!

    • Andrea says:

Thanks for the suggestion :) I haven’t tried that color combo. That reminds me that I also want to start featuring some Gelish layering combinations now that I’m done with all of the basic swatches.

PS- my name is KRISTINA… my morning coffee apparently hasn’t kicked in yet and I mispelled my own name!

Love your blog ! Could you please look into trying and swatching the brand Gel II ?

Love your blog, but since I’m a new subscriber, I would just like to see more of the same in the coming year. Your guidance on products and techniques is very helpful to someone who’s been ignoring her nails a lot since I became allergic to acrylics a few years ago. I love being able to find out about all different brands and effects of SOG polish in your posts, and I learned about nail stamping with plates and soft stampers, too. I’m afraid that I may have to make a choice with my “Santa money” now between my African violets and my nails. Here’s hoping that everything you love grows and blooms in 2014, Andrea–Happy New Year!

  10. Happy new year, you and your incredible work were my inspiration for useing Gels and LOVE it (even with the allergies!) thanks for such a brilliantly organised website and associated social networks! Thanks for answering every question people ask and providing seriously one of the best gel poslish/manicure resources on the net! You rock Andrea! Love from Cali (soon to be back in NZ)!

    Happy New Year!
My favorite is the watermarble manicure. I also loved your 4th of July, Christmas, and New Years manicures.

I hope to master watermarbling over a gel manicure as well as stamping.

Your videos and website have been very helpful to me in developing my nailart skills!

Much luck and success to you in 2014!

    • Andrea says:

Thanks, Arlene. That was the one and only time I’ve ever had success at water marbling. I also would like to practice more and learn to water marble with (or over) gel polish. :)
